about

Ironically based out of the area around the town of Normal, IL, the Dits are a recording triumvirate that like to produce epic recordings, many of them double-CD sets. A challenge is thus thrown down to the listener to take the time to experience these works, just as the musicians took the time to create them. For these guys it seems a matter of combatting boredom, as bandmember Pink Bob is fond of saying there is nothing to do in heartland America except what a person creates for himself. He has been at it a long time, and was around during the crazy hometaping era of the '80s. He and his fellow players know how to get a really good sound, but in this case the two discs are linked by more than just the beautiful recording and the identity of the players. The ten pieces are each named after people, some of them astronauts, and the entire project seems to be some kind of statement about space travel. Perhaps there is a connection between outer space and musicians spacing out, making recordings such as this that are not goaded on by the necessities of whipping up an audience. This is one aspect of the musical explorations here that make them quite different than typical live free improvisation, for example, although these pieces do seem to be completely improvised. The three musicians are very much in sympathy with each other, each playing a range of gear. The focus is always on a group statement, resulting in a weaving blend of new, distracting elements. Whether it is "Don Alejandro" or "Wally Schirra," the connection with outer space actually seems very natural, the slowly evolving creations of the trio very much like how one would imagine a long ride through space, endless pattterns of stars close at hand and the realities of life in rural Illinois a million light years away. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
